Anis Awadhiya : “Pune Teen Faces Drink Driving Charges After Porsche Accident”

The 17-year-old who struck two techies in Pune while driving a Porsche will face charges for drink driving, as ruled by a juvenile court today. The court has decided that he will be tried and penalised under section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which pertains to drink driving violations.

According to the act, drink driving is considered a criminal offence if a breath analyzer test shows that the driver of the motor vehicle has a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml.

For a first-time drink driving offence under the act, an individual could face up to six months in prison and a fine of £100. In the case of a second offence, the penalty could be extended to 2 years in jail and a fine of £150 (previously £30). Repeat offenders may also encounter repercussions related to their driving licences.

In the early hours of Sunday, two individuals, including a young woman, lost their lives after a Porsche collided with their motorcycle near Kalyani Nagar in Pune. The victims were identified as Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa. The tragic incident took place around 3.15 am.

The accident has sparked national outrage, especially after the teenager was granted bail within 15 hours under conditions that many have criticised as insufficient. A local court instructed him to write a 300-word essay on accidents, collaborate with traffic police for 15 days, and undergo counselling for his drinking habit.

Police disclosed that the accused had been consuming alcohol with his friends prior to the collision to celebrate his Class 12 results.

The 17-year-old who crashed his father’s luxury Porsche was aware that his actions could result in death, and the appropriate section of the Indian Penal Code will be applied against him, as confirmed by the chief of the Pune Police in an interview with NDTV.

Mr Kumar stated that the teenager, who is the son of a prominent Pune builder, underwent a medical examination in the early hours of Sunday, and his blood sample has been collected and sent for forensic analysis.
