murder

In a tragic incident in Jamnagar, Gujarat, a middle-aged man allegedly killed his daughter’s husband, 26-year-old Vira Thaparia, during an argument over domestic violence. The attack was carried out by the father-in-law and other relatives of the deceased.

Thaparia and his wife had been married for two years, and the wife had been staying with her parents for over three months. The fatal altercation occurred while the police were investigating a domestic violence case against Thaparia. Both the victim and his wife hailed from neighboring villages.

The conflict erupted when the girl’s relatives, who had come to attend a religious ceremony in Thaparia’s village, demanded the withdrawal of the case and the return of the woman to her husband’s home. This demand escalated into a physical confrontation, leading to the fatal stabbing of the young man by the girl’s father and brothers.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, Thaparia succumbed to his injuries. The relatives of the deceased have lodged a complaint with the police, while the girl’s father and relatives have also filed a counter-complaint, alleging that Thaparia and his family had attempted to attack them.

Dowry-related Violence in Kerala

Kerala has been grappling with a high number of domestic violence cases and dowry-related deaths. While there has been a decrease in dowry death rates in the state, incidents of dowry-related violence continue unabated.

According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau covering the period from 2011 to October 2023, Kerala recorded 192 dowry deaths in the past 12 years. The highest number of deaths was reported in 2012, with 32 fatalities, whereas the lowest number was recorded in 2020, with six deaths. The figures for subsequent years are as follows: 2016 (25 deaths), 2017 (12 deaths), 2018 (17 deaths), 2019 (8 deaths), 2021 (9 deaths), and seven deaths reported until October this year.

Although there is a widespread belief among Malayalees that giving or receiving dowry is illegal, the practice continues to persist. Under Section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, giving, receiving, or abetting dowry is a punishable offense with imprisonment of at least five years and a fine of Rs 15,000. The dowry must be returned to the bride within three months, failure of which can lead to imprisonment ranging from six months to two years and a fine of Rs 5,000 to 10,000.
