A teacher in British Columbia has been banned from teaching for 15 years after kissing a student at a party hosted at their home. The incident, which took place during a party attended by university students and recent high school graduates, was detailed in a consent agreement between the teacher and the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.
The unnamed high school teacher, who has been certified for over 30 years, had their certification suspended in September 2022 after the district filed a report against them. The teacher’s children, who are over 19 years old, hosted the party on the day of a local high school graduation. While most attendees were of legal drinking age, at least one student from the local high school, identified as Student A, was under 19 and consumed alcohol at the party.
According to the summary of the consent agreement, the teacher returned home after being out for dinner and was unaware that Student A had been drinking at the party. At one point during the event, the teacher kissed Student A on the lips, and this act was captured in photos that were circulated on social media.
Following the incident, the teacher resigned from the district and entered into a consent resolution agreement with the commissioner. In the agreement, the teacher admitted to professional misconduct and agreed to the cancellation of their teaching certificate, along with a 15-year ban on applying for reinstatement.
The commissioner determined that the 15-year ban was an appropriate consequence for the teacher’s actions, noting that they had endangered the emotional safety of the student. The commissioner also highlighted that the teacher’s behaviour was part of a pattern of boundary issues.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining professional boundaries and upholding ethical standards in the education sector. The teacher’s actions not only violated their duty of care towards students but also had lasting consequences for their teaching career.
