Accident – Death – Obituary News :

(Gray News) – Tyler Wenrich, one of the Americans detained in Turks and Caicos, has pleaded guilty to ammunition charges in a court hearing that took place on Tuesday. The 31-year-old will await his sentencing which is scheduled for May 28.

This development comes after officials in Turks and Caicos failed to reach an agreement with U.S. lawmakers regarding the five detained Americans facing ammunition charges in the region.

A bipartisan delegation consisting of two senators and four representatives made a trip to the British territory in an attempt to secure the release of the detained individuals, including Tyler Wenrich, Sharitta Grier, Michael Lee Evans, Bryan Hagerich, and Ryan Tyler Watson, who were all arrested over the past few months.

It is vital to note that bringing firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos is strictly prohibited. Despite this, all five Americans have maintained that the possession of such items was accidental.

The charge of carrying ammunition carries a minimum sentence of 12 years in prison; however, the judge has the discretion to reduce the sentence under exceptional circumstances.

Prior to the court hearing, Tyler Wenrich expressed his anxieties and hopes for leniency in an interview with WPVI. He stated, “I have a lot of fear and anxiety. You know, the best outcome to this is that the judge will find leniency and compassion in this situation and steer away from the 12-year sentence and be able to give a sentence that is less than that and a fine, hopefully.”

As of now, none of the detained Americans have been sentenced. Wenrich, who was on a cruise for a bachelor party trip in April, was allegedly found with two bullets in his backpack by authorities in Turks and Caicos, as reported by WWBT.

Jeriann Wenrich, Tyler’s wife, described the incident as “a complete and honest accident.” She explained, “It was more of like an emergency backpack in his car that he kept a lot of different things in, and I know sometimes he would take it to go shooting with his friends. We are normally always very, very careful about, especially having our son, about keeping things put away, keeping things in the gun safe.”

Notably, three U.S. governors, namely Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, had previously reached out to officials in Turks and Caicos to assist in securing the release of the detained Americans, as reported by the Associated Press.
