Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A heart-stopping incident unfolded in Surprise last week when police officers made a daring rescue of a 6-month-old infant who had been shot multiple times while being held hostage with his mother. The dramatic rescue was captured on body cam video released by Surprise Police Department officials on Monday.

The harrowing ordeal began when police received a distressing call around 11:30 a.m. on Friday and swiftly responded to a home near 168th Avenue and Jenan Drive. Upon arrival, officers were met with the chilling sound of multiple gunshots ringing out.

In a courageous act of bravery, one officer fired a gun at the house in response to the gunfire. Eventually, officers managed to breach the property and successfully rescue the infant, with shouts of “Get the baby!” echoing through the bodycam footage.

The injured baby was swiftly handed over to medics and airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for urgent medical attention. Meanwhile, an intense standoff ensued between law enforcement and the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Todd Christopher Marchetti.

Sergeant Rick Hernandez, spokesperson for the Surprise Police Department, revealed that negotiations with Marchetti proved futile as he adamantly refused to surrender and exit the premises. Tragically, the standoff culminated in a devastating turn of events when the house caught fire around 3 p.m., leading to Marchetti’s demise from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with authorities attributing the destruction of the home to the inability of firefighters to promptly access the active crime scene.

Unravelling the Intrusion

According to police reports, Marchetti forcibly entered the residence around 3 a.m. and held a woman and her infant son hostage. Despite the property belonging to the woman’s parents, it is believed that Marchetti exploited their absence to perpetrate the heinous act.

In a bid for escape, the woman ingeniously concocted various distractions to outwit Marchetti. After he callously shot the family dog, she persuaded him to accompany her to a vet under the guise of seeking medical attention for the pet. Tragically, the dog had to be euthanized, as Marchetti deceitfully misled the vet about the circumstances.

Upon returning to the house, the woman managed to seek help from construction workers nearby, who assisted her in alerting the authorities. Hernandez disclosed that Marchetti had a history of domestic violence reports against him, involving both the woman and a minor, although no restraining order was in place at the time.

Critical Condition of the Infant

The infant sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities and underwent several surgeries at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. As of Monday, the baby remains in intensive care in critical condition, despite a successful operation.

Hernandez expressed uncertainty regarding the duration of the baby’s injuries before the rescue operation. Additionally, the mother received treatment for minor injuries sustained during the ordeal.

In a heartfelt statement from the victims’ family conveyed by Hernandez, gratitude was expressed for the outpouring of community support in the aftermath of the traumatic incident. Two GoFundMe campaigns have been set up to aid the family during the baby’s recovery and the rebuilding process following the devastating fire.
