SALT LAKE CITY — A somber atmosphere enveloped Salt Lake City on Sunday as authorities responded to a distressing scene at a residence following a welfare check call. Inside the home, the lifeless bodies of a 34-year-old man identified as Samuel Bean Owen, a city employee, and his 6-year-old son were discovered.

The devastating news of the tragedy sent shockwaves through the community, with Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall expressing her profound sorrow over the loss. Owen, who worked as a policy analyst for the city, was not only a dedicated colleague but also a cherished friend to many within City Hall.

“I’m heartbroken by this unfathomable tragedy,” Mayor Mendenhall stated. “Sam was a dear colleague and friend to so many of us in City Hall. My heart aches for the Owen family and grieves with our city team and the broader community who are struggling with this situation.”

Authorities responded to the welfare check call made by a concerned family member, although the specific reasons for the call were not disclosed. Details regarding when Owen was last seen by his family members remain undisclosed.

Upon arriving at Owen’s residence near Van Buren Avenue and Main Street around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, law enforcement officers were met with a harrowing scene. It was determined that Owen had tragically taken the life of his son before ending his own.

Recent court documents revealed that Owen had filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in federal court, with the most recent hearing taking place just two days prior to the heartbreaking discovery. Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown expressed his condolences, acknowledging the challenging nature of such tragic incidents for law enforcement and social service personnel.
