The coroner has identified the victim of a tragic rollover crash on an exit ramp from Interstate 90 in Huntley as a retired doctor.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 8:40 p.m. on May 9 at the junction of Interstate 90 and Route 47 in Huntley following reports of a single-vehicle crash with injuries.

An Illinois State Police spokesperson confirmed that the incident occurred on the westbound ramp to northbound Route 47.

The vehicle involved, a Subaru Legacy sedan, was being driven by a 56-year-old woman from Roselle and had two passengers, a 90-year-old woman and an 85-year-old man, both from Huntley.

According to radio communications from the fire department, all three occupants were trapped inside the car, which had rolled over multiple times.

Emergency responders extricated the victims from the vehicle, and ambulances were called to the scene to provide medical assistance.

Tragically, the 90-year-old woman, identified as Remedios Escalona, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital.

The 56-year-old driver was also taken to the same hospital for treatment, while the 85-year-old man was transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

Details about the conditions of the driver and the male passenger have not been disclosed at this time.

According to a witness who was following the Subaru, the vehicle veered from the left lane to the right lane and the right shoulder before careening into a ditch and rolling over several times without applying the brakes.

An obituary for Escalona revealed that she leaves behind her husband of 58 years, three children, and six grandchildren.

Escalona, who obtained a Doctorate in Medicine in 1959, moved to the United States in 1967 to support her husband’s medical career and raise their family.

After passing her foreign medical examinations, she pursued a psychiatry residency at Loyola University of Chicago School of Medicine and later worked as a staff psychiatrist at Chicago Read Mental Health Center until her retirement in 2003.

A funeral visitation for Escalona is scheduled for May 31 at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home in Palatine.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
