A prince, a former Member of Parliament, and ex-army officers will stand trial on Tuesday, facing accusations of orchestrating a conspiracy theory-driven plot to attack the German parliament and overthrow the government.
The trial, taking place at the regional court in Frankfurt, is one of the most significant cases to be heard in German courts in decades. Prosecutors allege that the group planned a \”treasonous undertaking\” to storm the Bundestag and hold Members of Parliament hostage.
This trial is the second of three proceedings against individuals connected to the coup plot. In Frankfurt, eight suspected members of the group, along with a woman accused of supporting their efforts to topple Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government, will be in the dock.
Among the key figures is Prince Heinrich XIII Reuss, a minor aristocrat and businessman, who was reportedly set to assume the role of provisional head of state following the government’s overthrow. The elaborate plan, thwarted by authorities in late 2022, highlights the increasing threat of violence emanating from the political fringes in Germany.
Conspiracy Myths and Extremist Connections
The alleged plotters drew inspiration from various conspiracy theories, including the global QAnon movement, and were associated with the German Reichsbuerger (Citizens of the Reich) scene—a group of extremists who reject the legitimacy of the modern German republic.
Prosecutors claim that the group believed in the existence of a hidden \”deep state\” controlling Germany and awaited a signal from a fictional international \”Alliance\” of governments to initiate their coup.
The trial in Frankfurt is part of a complex legal process involving a total of 26 individuals, with separate proceedings being conducted in Stuttgart and Munich. The hearings are held under stringent security measures, with the Frankfurt trial taking place in a specially constructed, high-security facility.
Ringleaders and Alleged Roles
Alongside Prince Reuss, ex-soldiers Ruediger von Pescatore, Maximilian Eder, and Peter Woerner are accused of founding the group in July 2021. The defendants, including members of a \”council\” intended to replace the government post-coup, also feature in the trial.
Former MP for the far-right Alternative for Germany, Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, was allegedly earmarked for the justice portfolio in the envisioned new government, with reports suggesting her access to the parliament building facilitated the group’s reconnaissance efforts.
Another defendant, former policeman Michael Fritsch from Hanover, was reportedly slated to take over the interior ministry. Reuss’s partner, Vitalia B., a Russian citizen, is accused of aiding the coup plan and establishing contact with a Russian consulate official in Leipzig.
Russian Connections and Extremist Threats
Prince Reuss and von Pescatore purportedly sought a meeting with Russian officials in Bratislava in February 2022, with Reuss tasked with negotiating an agreement with Russia in the event of a successful coup. The extent of the Russian Federation’s response remains unclear.
The far-right threat poses the most significant extremist danger to Germany, officials warn. In a separate case, a new suspect has been charged in connection with another coup plot, with plans to kidnap the German health minister reportedly uncovered.
Recent years have seen a rise in attacks against public figures in Germany, following the murder of conservative politician Walter Luebcke by neo-Nazis in 2019. The former mayor of Berlin was assaulted in a library this month, while an MEP was hospitalized after being attacked while putting up campaign posters.
