Monrovia – The authorities in Monrovia have initiated a thorough investigation into a disturbing case involving a 31-year-old man, identified as Nipay T. Karpeh, who is accused of using social media platforms to cyber bully and blackmail numerous women in a bid to extort money.

The latest victims of Defendant Nipay’s alleged crimes are two Liberian women, named Gifty N. Williams and Janet Bright, who have reported to the police about the defendant’s actions of posting their intimate photos and videos on social media.

Following the complaints, Defendant Nipay was informed of his legal rights and subsequently charged with offenses related to disseminating obscene materials, criminal coercion, and disorderly conduct, contravening specific sections of the Liberian legal code.

During a press briefing held on Monday, May 20, 2024, Police spokeswoman Cecilia Clarke disclosed that the formal complaint was lodged at the CSD Charge of Quarters, while arrangements were being made for Defendant Nipay’s return from Dubai.

Madam Clarke further revealed that the investigation team had obtained copies of the incriminating photos and videos for analysis, and Defendant Nipay’s identifying details, including his photographs, were circulated to facilitate his potential arrest.

Arrest and Confessions

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, Defendant Nipay was apprehended by officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency upon his arrival at the Robert International Airport and subsequently handed over to the Liberia National Police for further questioning.

One of the victims, Gifty N. Williams, narrated her ordeal to the investigators, stating that she initially connected with Defendant Nipay on Facebook in 2016, leading to a close friendship that eventually turned sour when he allegedly recorded and stored a video of her in a vulnerable state without her consent.

Victim Williams mentioned that despite cutting off communication with Defendant Nipay in 2017 due to her marriage to someone else, she was shocked to discover her private video circulating on social media platforms in 2021, allegedly posted by the defendant.

Janet Bright, another victim residing in America, recounted her experience with Defendant Nipay, known as ‘Raso Daso,’ whom she encountered on a social media platform managed by Charlotte Roberts. The platform, which served as a virtual community, turned hostile when Defendant Nipay began cyber bullying and harassing her.

During the course of the investigation, Defendant Nipay confessed to the accusations of posting Victim Gifty N. Williams’s intimate photos and videos, expressing remorse for his actions. However, he was taken aback when he learned that Victim Gifty had escalated the matter to the authorities.

It is evident from the ongoing investigation that Defendant Nipay T. Karpeh exploited social media as a tool to intimidate and extort funds from women, highlighting the alarming prevalence of cybercrime in contemporary society.
