Accident – Death – Obituary News : Rescuers in the northern region of Minnesota are currently engaged in a search operation for two individuals who have been missing since Saturday after their canoes plunged over Curtain Falls. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred at 7:21 p.m. local time on Saturday in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near the Canadian border. The missing individuals have been identified as 41-year-old Jesse Melvin Haugen and 40-year-old Reis Melvin Grams.

In a statement released on Sunday, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad expressed deep concern for the two missing paddlers. Despite facing numerous challenges, the rescue team managed to successfully evacuate two injured individuals and one uninjured person from the scene. However, the search for Haugen and Grams continues, with no success thus far.

The search efforts have been intensified with the deployment of remote-controlled vehicles and drones. The sheriff’s office has confirmed that the rescue team is operating around the clock in a bid to locate the missing individuals. Access to Curtain Falls is extremely challenging, requiring the assistance of aviation partners to transport essential equipment and personnel to the remote location.

Division Commander Nate Skelton of the sheriff’s office highlighted the difficult conditions faced by rescuers in their search operation. The treacherous terrain, characterised by high water levels and rapid currents, poses a significant challenge to the search efforts. The falls cascade down approximately 30 feet, creating a complex environment for search and rescue operations.

According to Skelton, the canoeists were engaged in fishing activities at the top of the falls when the incident occurred. It is believed that one individual encountered difficulties, prompting another individual to offer assistance. Subsequently, both canoes carrying four individuals went over the falls, leading to the current search and rescue operation.

The community has been urged to keep Haugen, Grams, and their families in their thoughts as the search efforts continue. The rescue team remains committed to locating the missing individuals and providing support to their loved ones during this challenging time. The sheriff’s office emphasised the importance of safety precautions while engaging in outdoor activities, particularly in areas with hazardous conditions such as waterfalls..
