(CNN) — Authorities in northern Minnesota are currently conducting a search and rescue mission for two individuals who went missing after their canoes went over Curtain Falls.

The incident took place at Iron Lake near the Canada border, prompting the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office to respond to the scene at 7:21 p.m. on Saturday. According to a news release, two canoes were involved in the accident at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, resulting in one person being severely injured and two individuals missing.

Following the incident, a helicopter was deployed just after midnight to rescue one injured person and one uninjured individual. The injured party was airlifted to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.

The missing individuals have been identified as Jesse Melvin Haugen, aged 41, and Reis Melvin Grams, aged 40.

Expressing their condolences, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad shared on Facebook that the incident has deeply affected the friends, families, and wider circle of acquaintances of the missing individuals.

Search efforts have faced numerous challenges and setbacks, including unreliable cell phone and radio communication, as highlighted in the Facebook post. Despite the difficulties, rescue teams have been tirelessly working through the night and are prepared to continue the search at first light.

The search operation involves the use of remotely-operated vehicles and drones to aid in locating the missing canoeists. Due to the challenging terrain around Curtain Falls, aviation support is crucial for transporting equipment, supplies, and personnel to and from the remote location.

Earlier this month, a tragic incident occurred in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area when a canoeist was discovered deceased in Lake Agnes, as reported in a news release by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

Situated on the border between Minnesota and Ontario, Canada, St. Louis County is known for its picturesque wilderness and outdoor recreational opportunities.

CNN has reached out to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office for further updates on the ongoing search and rescue operation.
