Search and rescue teams are currently scouring the waters of Iron Lake in northern Minnesota after two individuals went missing following a canoeing incident at Curtain Falls. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the situation on Saturday evening and has since launched a full-scale operation to locate the missing canoeists.

According to a statement released by the sheriff’s office, two canoes were swept over Curtain Falls in the renowned Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Tragically, one individual sustained severe injuries, while two others are still unaccounted for.

In the early hours of the morning, a helicopter was deployed to rescue the injured individual and another person who escaped unharmed. The injured party was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The missing individuals have been identified as Jesse Melvin Haugen, aged 41, and Reis Melvin Grams, aged 40. Their families and friends are understandably distraught by the events that transpired at Curtain Falls.

The search efforts have faced numerous challenges, including unreliable communication channels and difficult terrain. Despite these obstacles, rescue teams have worked tirelessly throughout the night and are determined to continue their efforts at first light.

Utilizing a range of resources, including remotely-operated vehicles and drones, the sheriff’s office is leaving no stone unturned in the search for the missing canoeists. The treacherous nature of Curtain Falls has made access difficult, requiring assistance from aviation partners to transport personnel and equipment.

Tragically, this incident comes on the heels of another fatality in the area, where a canoeist was found dead in Lake Agnes within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office is urging caution to all visitors to this popular wilderness destination.

Located on the border with Ontario, Canada, St. Louis County is no stranger to outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure in its pristine landscapes. CNN has reached out to the sheriff’s office for further updates on the ongoing search and rescue mission.
