The incident took place on Iron Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office receiving a distress call about a “water emergency” on Saturday, May 18, at approximately 7:21 p.m. local time.

According to a press release by the sheriff’s office, two canoes were swept over Curtain Falls, resulting in one individual sustaining severe injuries and two others being reported missing.

Efforts to rescue the individuals were launched immediately, with a DNR helicopter evacuating one injured person and an uninjured party to Essentia Duluth for medical attention.

Search operations resumed on May 19, with the St. Louis County Rescue Squad leading the efforts, supported by various agencies including North Air Care, Virginia Fire, MN DNR helicopter, MART, Minnesota Air Rescue Team, and U.S. Forest Service.

Despite the challenging conditions, including rapid water flow and remote wilderness terrain, the search teams remain determined to locate the missing individuals – 41-year-old Jesse Melvin Haugen and 40-year-old Reis Melvin Grams.

Meanwhile, 47-year-old Kyle Thomas Sellers was identified as one of the injured canoeists, with Erik Michael Grams, 43, and Jared Lay Lohse also involved in the incident.

As the search continues, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area organization has issued a reminder for visitors to be cautious of the risks and adverse conditions in the area, emphasizing the importance of safety measures such as wearing a life jacket and being prepared for sudden changes in weather and water conditions.

The St Louis County Rescue Squad, in a Facebook post, recounted the challenges faced during the rescue mission and expressed their commitment to locating the missing paddlers.
