Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, Ph.D., has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of the buying and selling of babies and the proliferation of baby factories across the country.

Adekoye Vincent, Communication Officer at NAPTIP, highlighted the alarming reports and public outcry surrounding the sale of babies and the presence of facilities focused on trapping young girls, engaging men to impregnate them, and ultimately selling the babies post-delivery.

These clandestine factories take advantage of the desperation and vulnerability of unsuspecting victims, often enticing them with promises of financial gain or false assurances of care and support.

One recent incident took place in Umunkwa village, situated in the Umuafai Ndume Ibeku area of Umuahia North Local Government, Abia State. Ten victims were rescued from a baby factory, including seven young girls (six pregnant), one lactating mother, and two minor boys.

The baby factory was uncovered by the Department of State Services (DSS), Abia State Command, leading to the arrest of a sixty-three-year-old woman identified as Chinyere Nkwocha, the alleged owner of the facility.

Both the suspects and victims were handed over to the NAPTIP Abia State Liaison Office for further investigation and necessary actions.

Commending the DSS Abia State Command for their successful operation, the Director-General urges the public, especially parents, to remain vigilant and ensure their wards are not preyed upon by these unscrupulous individuals.

She also encourages communities to continue collaborating with Law Enforcement Agencies to combat these heinous crimes by promptly reporting all human trafficking cases to NAPTIP through its toll-free number, 0703 0000 203, or short code 627 (MTN & AIRTEL Only).
