One of the callers, a semi-truck driver, recounted how he encountered a stalled car near the crash site, which was later identified as belonging to Ellis.
For five days, Ellis remained at large, evading authorities until he turned himself in on September 18, accompanied by his attorney, Shaun Wimberly. The circumstances surrounding his surrender raised suspicions, with Christopher’s father expressing doubts about Ellis’ motives and state of mind at the time.
Although initial investigations did not indicate alcohol or drug involvement in the collision, the police report revealed that Ellis had been speeding at the time of the fatal impact. Subsequently, Ellis faced charges of leaving the scene of a fatal collision and failure to render aid, as well as failure to maintain insurance. He ultimately pleaded guilty to these charges on April 15.
