A 38-year-old man is set to appear in the Gqeberha magistrate’s court on Monday following his arrest on May 16. The arrest came after an extensive investigation by the Gqeberha Trafficking In Persons team, Provincial Crime Intelligence, and the Local Criminal Record Centre.

The suspect is accused of kidnapping a 31-year-old foreign national from his business premises in North End on April 5. The victim was reportedly accosted by a group of armed individuals and forced into an Opel Mokka before being taken to various locations where he was held against his will.

During the abduction, the suspects used the victim’s cellphone to contact his mother and demand a ransom. The victim was ultimately found in Kariega six days after the kidnapping took place.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana revealed that investigations led to the identification of a Toyota Fortuner and an Audi as the vehicles suspected to have been used in the kidnapping. The victim was allegedly transported to three different addresses in Gqeberha in the Audi.

Following leads, the joint team was able to locate the Toyota Fortuner at a car wash on April 11, where it was seized for further investigation. Two days later, the Audi was found in Colchester and also seized by authorities.

One suspect was arrested at one of the addresses where the victim was believed to have been held. Mhlakuvana mentioned that additional arrests were expected to follow as the investigation progressed.

Major-General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya of the Hawks praised the collaborative efforts of the team in apprehending one of the suspects involved in the kidnapping case.
