The suspect in the shooting of Kennesaw State University student Alasia Franklin has been identified as Samuel Harris. Harris allegedly used a Glock 9mm handgun to shoot Franklin during a dispute on campus. He fled the scene but was later arrested and taken into custody, according to a Cobb arrest report obtained on Sunday. Harris, who is in his early 20s, is Franklin’s ex-boyfriend, said Henderson-Fortner.

Not a student at KSU, Harris is from Cairo, a South Georgia town where Franklin attended high school, as confirmed by county jail records.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting that took place on Saturday.

Victim Remembered for Academic Achievements

Alasia Franklin, known for her academic excellence, was an honor student since middle school and continued to excel in the nursing program at KSU, where she made the Dean’s List. Her mother described her as smart, intelligent, and with a heart of gold.

Her father, Frederick Fain, expressed his grief, calling Franklin his oldest daughter and praising her intelligence and kindness.

Franklin was a junior homecoming court member at KSU, celebrated her 21st birthday, and was known for her radiant smile.

An alert about an armed intruder triggered a campus lockdown for about 45 minutes on Saturday, the fourth such incident since 2018.

Campus Safety Concerns

Freshman Trevor Morgan recalled a previous incident where he felt trapped on campus during a robbery. He emphasized the importance of safety measures.

Despite recent security incidents, student Katya Klimov expressed shock at the shooting, highlighting the need for improved safety protocols.

After the shooting, student Anthony Harrison rushed to aid the victim, expressing his condolences to Franklin’s family.

Campus Security Measures Under Scrutiny

Recent graduate Katya Klimov highlighted the need for improved campus safety following the shooting incident. She stressed the importance of implementing better rules to enhance security on campus.

KSU police records show no homicides on campus in the past five years. However, incidents of burglary, robbery, and assault have been reported. The university is collaborating with the GBI on the ongoing investigation.

KSU officials are offering counseling resources for students in need of support following the tragic event.
