A Pennsylvania teenager had to be resuscitated in March when he went into cardiac arrest after consuming Panera Bread’s highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday. The incident occurred just under two weeks after Panera announced the discontinuation of the controversial beverage, which has been the subject of multiple lawsuits.
The lawsuit, filed in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, alleges that 18-year-old Luke Adams had no known health issues when he purchased a chicken sandwich and a large Charged Lemonade on March 9 in his hometown of Monroeville. While watching a movie at a local theater later that evening, Adams became unresponsive, prompting a friend to call for help.
Two nurses and a cardiologist who happened to be in the theater performed CPR on Adams, using an automated external defibrillator to shock his heart back to normal rhythm. Dr. Andrew Pogozelski, the cardiologist who treated Adams, described the situation as extremely dire, stating that Adams was close to death.
Following the incident, Adams experienced two seizures in the hospital. Medical notes indicated that the seizures were possibly related to the cardiac arrest triggered by heavy caffeine intake from the Panera Charged Lemonade. Adams, a high school junior, expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal, acknowledging the swift actions of those who helped him.
Charged Lemonade, which contained caffeine from various sources including guarana extract, has been the target of several lawsuits attributing it to adverse health effects, including two deaths and permanent injuries. Panera has faced criticism for marketing the beverage as a harmless energy drink while allegedly failing to disclose its high caffeine content.
Following the lawsuits, Panera introduced more detailed warnings about the Charged Lemonade, advising customers to consume it in moderation and cautioning against its use by children, individuals sensitive to caffeine, or pregnant and nursing women. The company also adjusted its marketing and placement of the drink in response to the legal challenges.
Adams’ lawsuit seeks damages and accuses Panera of negligence in the design, marketing, and promotion of the Charged Lemonade. Elizabeth Crawford, a lawyer representing Adams and other plaintiffs in similar cases, emphasized the preventable nature of the incident and criticised Panera for not taking action sooner.
Despite the traumatic experience, Adams and his family are grateful for his recovery and hopeful that no other individual will suffer similar consequences due to the consumption of Panera’s Charged Lemonade.
