Accident – Death – Obituary News :

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Two individuals have been apprehended by law enforcement for their alleged involvement in attempting to sell a collection of high-powered firearms to an undercover federal agent in Laredo, Texas, earlier this week.

The weapons in question, which included a grenade launcher and four modified “machine gun pistols,” were reportedly acquired in the Dallas area and then transported to San Antonio by a man identified as Luis Azael Berlanga, according to court documents.

Upon reaching Laredo, Berlanga enlisted the assistance of Juan Jose Moreno Jr. to aid in the sale of the firearms, as detailed in a complaint affidavit filed on Friday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

The duo purportedly located a potential buyer willing to pay $10,000 for the firearms and arranged a meeting at an address on the 4000 block of Zapata Memorial Highway in Laredo, where they showcased their inventory to the buyer, who was, in fact, an undercover Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent, according to the complaint.

The inventory included a range of firearms such as Diamondback Firearms DB-15 pistols, Anderson Manufacturing AM-15 pistols, a Pioneer Arms Hellpup 7.62 mm pistol, and a 37 mm grenade launcher, all of which were allegedly equipped with a drop-in auto-sear for continuous firing.

Following the transaction where Berlanga received $10,000 from the agent, a tactical team comprising members of the Laredo Police Department, ATF, and Border Patrol intervened and seized the firearms, confirming the presence of the auto-sears and conducting tests to ascertain their machine gun functionality, as outlined in court records.

During subsequent interviews with investigators, Berlanga purportedly admitted to being aware of the altered state of the pistols and driving from San Antonio to Laredo with the intention of selling them, as per the criminal complaint.

Moreno, on the other hand, allegedly disclosed to authorities that Berlanga had promised him $100 for his involvement in the sale and had previously assisted in selling a Glock with a special switch for continuous fire, as per the complaint.

Both individuals have been charged with illegal possession of a machine gun, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 24 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga in Laredo.
