Accident – Death – Obituary News :

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has revealed the identity of the suspect involved in a recent police shooting and stabbing incident that took place over the weekend.

According to MPD, the incident occurred at a Columbia Plaza apartment complex located in the 2400 block of Virginia Avenue in Northwest at approximately 10:40 a.m. on Saturday morning. Authorities were responding to a welfare check call concerning a man experiencing a mental health crisis.

Upon arrival, officers were informed by a bystander that their friend was in distress due to a mental health episode. Second District Commander Tatjana Savoy stated that when the police attempted to apprehend the man, he brandished a knife from his pocket and proceeded to stab one of the officers in the neck.

Subsequently, an officer discharged their weapon, shooting the suspect just before 2:30 p.m. Despite the use of a TASER by another officer, it was reportedly ineffective in subduing the individual. Following the incident, four officers have been placed on administrative leave.

The injured officer received immediate medical attention at the scene for their wounds. The suspect responsible for the stabbing has been identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Jefferson from Northwest, D.C. Emergency responders provided medical assistance to Jefferson before transporting him to a nearby hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Jonathan Jefferson has been charged with four counts of assault on a police officer and is currently in custody. The incident has left residents in the area shaken, with one individual expressing their concerns over the safety of the neighbourhood.

This shooting incident comes in the wake of a similar event that took place five months prior in January, where an MPD officer fatally shot a man during a crisis intervention call after he allegedly attacked a paramedic.
