Accident – Death – Obituary News : A man from Florida is facing charges after the decapitated remains of his bulldog mix, Dexter, were discovered at a local park just days after he adopted the dog, according to the local sheriff’s office.

Domingo R. Rodriguez, 66, of St. Petersburg, was arrested following the grim discovery of Dexter’s deceased body at a Pinellas County park, as reported by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).

Rodriguez has been charged with one count of animal cruelty, a third-degree felony, and one count of disposal of a dead animal, a second-degree misdemeanor. He was subsequently released from the Pinellas County Jail on a $5,000 bond on May 15.

The heart-wrenching incident unfolded shortly after Rodriguez adopted the 4-year-old bulldog mix from Pinellas County Animal Services on May 10, PCSO confirmed.

Upon responding to reports of a “deceased dog wrapped in a plastic bag” near the East Beach area of Fort De Soto Park on May 14 around 6:45 p.m., PCSO deputies made the harrowing discovery of Dexter’s decapitated body floating in the mangroves.

Rodriguez, identified as Dexter’s owner through the dog’s microchip, was questioned at his residence, where he confessed to recently adopting the dog. He claimed that Dexter had run away overnight on May 10, according to the sheriff’s office.

Further investigation revealed that Rodriguez had visited Fort De Soto Park on May 11, providing authorities with conflicting statements. Surveillance footage allegedly captured Rodriguez driving to the park in his gray pickup truck with a large cooler in the bed on the morning of May 11.

Rodriguez’s wife informed investigators that Dexter was alive when she went to bed on May 10, but upon waking up the next morning, both her husband and the dog were gone, according to the arrest report.

The motive behind Dexter’s tragic demise remains unclear, with the sheriff’s office refraining from divulging additional details about the incident as the investigation continues.

Pinellas County Animal Services expressed their sorrow over Dexter’s untimely death in a Facebook post, emphasizing the importance of their work in caring for animals in need.

“Dogs like Dexter who arrive as strays, many injured and scarred, are the reason animal welfare workers and volunteers dedicate themselves to their cause,” the post read. “Our hearts ache for Dexter, and we appreciate the support and condolences from our community during this difficult time.”

As the investigation unfolds, the community awaits justice for Dexter and the assurance that such acts of cruelty will not go unpunished..
