A man has been taken into custody in connection with a hit-and-run incident that left a pedestrian with serious injuries, according to officials.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred at 1:24 a.m. on Monday on Jersey Avenue in New Brunswick. The victim, a 25-year-old man, was quickly transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, as stated in a news release by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers discovered that the vehicle involved had already fled the area.
Police were able to identify the suspect as Abel Bustos-Medel, a 31-year-old resident of New Brunswick, later on Monday. Bustos-Medel was apprehended and has since been charged with assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury, and driving under the influence, authorities confirmed.
According to prosecutors, Bustos-Medel was spotted driving his sedan on Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick. The vehicle matched the description of the one believed to have been involved in the incident, and it exhibited damage consistent with a collision with a pedestrian.
