BOSTON – London woman arrested for trafficking marijuana at Logan Airport

A woman from London was ordered to be held on $1,500 bail after U.S. Customs and Border agents seized around 70 pounds of marijuana from her before her flight back to the United Kingdom. This marks the second incident in the last two months where a passenger flying to the U.K. has been arrested at Logan Airport for attempting to traffic marijuana, District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

19-year-old Fareedat Folunsho, hailing from London, was charged in East Boston BMC with trafficking marijuana weighing between 50 and 100 pounds. Judge Joseph Griffin set Folunsho’s bail at $1,500 and ordered her to surrender her passport. She is scheduled to appear in court on May 21 for a probable cause hearing.

Following a report, a Massachusetts state trooper was sent to the U.S. Customs Hall where a woman, later identified as Folunsho, was in custody for trying to board a flight back to the United Kingdom with approximately 70 pounds of marijuana in her possession.

Folunsho becomes the second individual attempting to travel to the U.K. who has been arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana between 50 and 100 pounds from Logan Airport since April.

Marijuana remains illegal in the United Kingdom, where it holds an illicit-market street value of around $5,000 per pound.

In a similar incident last month, a woman from Michigan was arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana in East Boston BMC after U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents intercepted two large suitcases containing multiple vacuum-sealed bags holding approximately 74 pounds of marijuana.

Commenting on the recent arrests, District Attorney Kevin Hayden stated, “These two arrests in a fairly short time span should make it quite clear to anyone else attempting to transport marijuana to the U.K. through Boston that it’s not a wise decision. It did not work out for these two women, and it is unlikely to work out for anyone else in the future.”
