SEYMOUR — A Columbus man, Tre Xavier Vires, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for leaving the scene of a fatal crash resulting in death and leaving the scene of a personal-injury crash resulting in catastrophic injury. The sentencing was handed down by Jackson Circuit Judge Richard W. Poynter.

Judge Poynter suspended two years of the sentence and gave Vires credit for four days served.

The incident that led to Vires’ arrest occurred on March 24, 2023, when the Seymour Police Department received a report of an unconscious person lying in the roadway on South Vine Street. The victim, Charles Layman, 73, was later pronounced dead at Schneck Medical Center. Another individual, Tiffany Brewer, 33, was also injured in the crash.

Investigators received information about the driver of the vehicle that had left the scene and were able to locate and interview Vires with his attorney on March 27, 2023. Vires was subsequently arrested on felony charges.

Penalties for Level 4 Felonies in Indiana

In Indiana, a Level 4 felony carries a potential prison sentence of two to 12 years, with an advisory sentence of six years upon conviction.
