Tragedy struck in Haryana’s Nuh district as a moving tourist bus caught fire near Dhulawat village in the early hours of Saturday, claiming the lives of nine people, including five women and a 12-year-old girl. The incident, which took place around 2 am on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway, has left 17 others injured.

Details of the Incident

The bus was carrying around 60 people, all residents of Punjab’s Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana, who were returning from pilgrim towns of Mathura and Vrindavan. The passengers, who were all relatives, were on their way back home when the tragic incident occurred. The cause of the fire is believed to be a short circuit in the AC box of the bus, although investigations are still ongoing.

An FIR has been registered against the bus driver, who fled the scene after the incident, at Sadar Tauru police station. Of the 17 injured, 14 have been discharged from Nalhar medical college, Nuh, while three women are still undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

Investigation and Response

Deputy Commissioner, Nuh, Dhirendra Khadgata, has stated that the forensic team of Madhuban will investigate the cause of the fire in the bus. Sub Divisional Magistrate Tauru Sanjeev Kumar has been appointed as the nodal officer to oversee the investigation.

Local resident Vasim recounted how he and others tried to alert the driver to stop the bus when they noticed the fire, but the driver continued driving. Despite their efforts, the fire spread rapidly inside the bus. The police and fire department were notified, and four fire tenders arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames.

Victims and Survivors

Among the deceased are Shashi Sharma, Gautam Sharma, 12-year-old Jovita alias Khushi, Sunita Bhasin, Darshan Lal, and Amar Rani. The injured have been identified as Hasraj, Payal Sharma, Soni Sharma, Swatantra Sharma, Sudesh Kumar, Urmila Sharma, Nisha Sharma, Anju Sharma, Sangeeta, Meena Rani, Krishna, Naresh Kumar, Javinder Rana, Baljeet Singh, Poonam, Vijay Kumar, and Shanti.

Dr Vardhman of Nalhar medical college confirmed that Shanti and Sudesh were referred to PGIMS, Rohtak, and Sangeeta was referred to a hospital in Gurugram due to their critical conditions. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for postmortem.

Survivors’ Accounts

Survivor Hansraj described the chaos and panic inside the bus as smoke filled up, leading people to jump out of windows to escape. He mentioned that the main door of the bus got locked from outside, and there was no emergency exit, forcing passengers to take drastic measures to save themselves.

Another survivor, Rakesh Kumar, who filed a complaint against the bus driver, detailed how the incident unfolded during their return journey from Vrindavan. An FIR has been registered against the driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Political Response

Gurugram Lok Sabha seat’s BJP candidate Rao Inderjit Singh and INDIA bloc’s Congress candidate Raj Babbar expressed their condolences over the tragic incident. Babbar postponed all his election-related programmes to visit the injured, while Singh sent a team to Nalhar medical college to offer support.
