Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after being shot by a Haines City police officer when he allegedly reached for a gun in a stolen vehicle. The incident occurred Friday night and involved a high-speed chase that ended in gunfire, according to Haines City Police Chief Gregory Goreck and Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

The teenager, identified as Javier Najera, was a passenger in the stolen vehicle driven by 19-year-old Victor Espinoza-Rodriguez, who was arrested following the incident. Judd revealed that the stolen vehicle, a 2014 Nissan Versa, had been reported missing within the last 24 hours.

Police Pursuit and Shooting

According to Chief Goreck, the police officer attempted to stop the stolen vehicle after locating it around 7 p.m. The occupants of the car, however, chose to flee, leading to a pursuit that reached speeds of up to 100 mph. The chase ended when the stolen vehicle collided with another car, prompting the officers to deploy stop sticks to immobilize the Nissan.

During the encounter, Najera allegedly reached for a 9mm Smith & Wesson gun, prompting the officer to fire his weapon in self-defence. Najera was then taken into custody and rushed to emergency surgery. The driver, Espinoza-Rodriguez, was also apprehended at the scene.

Investigation and Charges

Sheriff Judd mentioned that the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the incident. Espinoza-Rodriguez, who has a history of felony charges, misdemeanours, and probation violations, could face additional charges related to the stolen vehicle, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, and aggravated assault.

Judd also highlighted the presence of drug paraphernalia, including a bong, cannabis, and THC cartridges, in the stolen vehicle. He used the opportunity to voice his opposition to a proposed amendment seeking to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida.

Officer’s Actions Commended

Sheriff Judd commended Officer Sean Bruner, who fired the shot that incapacitated Najera, for his bravery and swift action during the pursuit. Despite the tense situation, no law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge regarding the charges filed against Espinoza-Rodriguez and Najera. The community awaits further updates on the condition of the teenager and the outcome of the investigation.
