Slovak Prime Minister and chairman of the Smer-SD party, Robert Fico, who was re-elected as prime minister for the fourth time last year, has survived an assassination attempt by a gunman in Handlova, Slovakia. The incident took place on Wednesday, and Fico remains in serious condition but with an improved prognosis as reported on Saturday. The 59-year-old politician is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Banska Bystrica.

Despite the attack, Fico is stable but still in serious condition and will not be transferred to Bratislava for a few more days. He underwent a second surgical procedure that lasted two hours on Friday, according to Health Minister Zuzana Dolinkova. The Prime Minister sustained four bullet wounds to his stomach and arm during the close-range shooting by the gunman while he was meeting with his supporters.

Although hospitalized, Fico continues to fulfill his duties as the acting prime minister. The assailant, identified as 71-year-old Juraj Cintula from Levice, has been charged with attempted murder and is currently in custody awaiting trial. It is believed that Cintula acted alone in the politically motivated attack and had recently been involved in anti-government protests, as stated by Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok.

Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba has accused the opposition and Slovakian news outlet Dennik N of inciting hatred against Fico and other government officials. Fico, known for his controversial political stance, returned to power last year on a pro-Russian and anti-United States platform. Despite Slovakia’s previous support for Ukraine during the Russian invasion, Fico halted arms shipments to Ukraine after regaining power.

This latest election victory marked the fourth time Robert Fico has served as Slovakia’s prime minister, solidifying his position as a key figure in the country’s political landscape.
