Severe Rainfall Triggers Flash Flood at Old Courtallam Falls in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu

Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu: The tranquil surroundings of Old Courtallam Falls in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, were disrupted by a sudden deluge caused by heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats. This unexpected downpour led to a flash flood at the popular tourist spot, claiming the life of a young boy and prompting authorities to impose a ban on bathing in all the waterfalls of Courtallam until further notice.

The Courtallam waterfalls, including the Main Falls, Five Falls, and Old Courtallam Falls, will remain off-limits to tourists as per the directives of Tenkasi District Collector AK Kamal Kishore in response to the ‘Orange alert’ issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

On a tragic note, a 17-year-old boy named Ashwin lost his life in the flash flood at the Old Courtallam Falls. He was swept away by the sudden surge of water while enjoying a dip in the falls. His lifeless body was discovered amidst the rocks around half a kilometer away from the Courtallam Old Falls, sending shockwaves through the community. The incident prompted a swift evacuation of visitors, including children, as they fled from the rapidly rising waters.

After experiencing a dry spell throughout the summer, the waterfalls had only recently come to life due to the rains in the Western Ghats. Tourists were granted permission to bathe in the falls just a few days ago, unaware of the impending danger that lurked.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued warnings of heavy rainfall in various areas including Valparai, Kodaikanal, Virudunagar Ghats, Kutralam, and Kanyakumari Ghats. Moderate to isolated heavy rains are expected in districts such as Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, and others. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, and surrounding regions may also experience isolated light to moderate showers.
