Accident – Death – Obituary News :

After more than three decades, a significant development has occurred in the case of the brutal murder of 78-year-old Rose Hnath in her Lehigh Valley home. Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan recently announced the arrest of Michael Breisch, now 65, on charges of homicide and burglary in connection with Hnath’s tragic death in 1989.

The Tragic Murder of Rose Hnath

Rose Hnath, a widow residing alone in her home on 2nd Street in the Coplay area of North Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, was found brutally murdered on January 21, 1989. Family members discovered her lifeless body after she failed to attend her usual church service, with signs of a violent struggle evident in her ransacked home.

Forensic findings revealed that Hnath had succumbed to multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma, indicating a fierce resistance during the attack. A knife and pellet gun found at the scene and across the street were preserved as key pieces of evidence in the investigation.

Breakthrough in the Cold Case

Decades of investigative efforts finally yielded results when advanced DNA technology led authorities to Michael Breisch as the prime suspect in Hnath’s murder. At the time of the incident, Breisch was residing in a community corrections facility in Allentown, although he is not connected to a previous burglary at Hnath’s residence.

Following his identification as the suspect, Breisch was apprehended in Ohio, where he had briefly resided after leaving Pennsylvania. He has since been extradited back to Pennsylvania and is currently detained at the Lehigh County Jail without bail, facing charges of criminal homicide, burglary, robbery, and other related offenses.

Investigators, including Pennsylvania State troopers Jared Christman and Zachary McCornac, as well as Lehigh County Detectives Robert Egan and Joseph Vazquez, worked tirelessly on the case. The collaborative efforts of the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force, and law enforcement agencies in Coshocton County, Ohio, were instrumental in Breisch’s arrest and extradition.

Family’s Closure and Legal Proceedings

Hnath’s family members have expressed relief and gratitude upon learning of Breisch’s arrest, bringing a sense of closure after years of uncertainty. Investigators have confirmed that there is no evidence suggesting a prior connection between Breisch and Hnath, and they believe he acted alone in committing the heinous crime.

As legal proceedings progress, Breisch is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 21, 2024. Online court records do not currently indicate any legal representation for him.

This significant development in the long-standing cold case underscores the importance of perseverance and advancements in forensic technology in seeking justice for victims of unsolved crimes.
