Joseph James : Man Arrested for Raping 24-Year-Old Woman

Mumbai: A 50-year-old man named Joseph James has been arrested for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman in Mumbai on the pretext of offering her a job, the police reported on Saturday.

The incident occurred at the Worli police station in the city. The victim, a resident of Thane who was in search of employment, sought assistance from a male friend. This friend provided her with the contact number of Joseph, advising her to get in touch with him.

On Thursday evening, the victim’s friend informed her that Joseph wanted to meet her in Khar. Acting on the information, the victim took a taxi to Khar, where she met her friend and Joseph. Subsequently, the three of them went to a hotel, where they consumed alcohol. At around midnight, they departed for their respective homes.

According to the victim’s statement to the police, while en route to Khar station, Joseph offered to drop her off there. However, he diverted from the route, claiming that no trains would be available at that hour and suggested that she sleep in his car. The victim alleged that around 3 in the morning, while she was asleep in the car, Joseph began molesting her. When she objected, he forcibly undressed her and sexually assaulted her. The victim further claimed that Joseph threatened her, instructing her not to disclose the incident to anyone.

Nevertheless, the victim confided in a lawyer friend, who advised her to file a complaint immediately. Acting upon this advice, she approached the nearest police station and lodged a formal complaint. In response, the Worli police registered a case and apprehended the accused.
