After one of the two finalists for the interim superintendent position withdrew from consideration on May 13, Swansea Superintendent John Robidoux emerged as the sole candidate for the role in Marblehead.

Last fall, Robidoux announced his decision to leave Swansea at the end of the current school year due to a strained relationship with the school committee, as reported by The Herald News.

In a letter addressed to the Swansea School Committee, Robidoux expressed his disappointment, stating, “It has become increasingly evident over the last several months that members of this committee no longer value me, my hard work, or my dedication.”

Barbara Cataldo Withdraws from Interim Superintendent Consideration

During a May 16 meeting, Marblehead School Committee Chair Sarah Fox announced that Hingham’s interim student services director, Barbara Cataldo, had also withdrawn her application for the interim superintendent position in Marblehead. Cataldo indicated that she would consider applying for the permanent position next year.

Fox expressed regret over Cataldo’s decision to withdraw, stating, “We’re very sorry to see her go.” Member Jenn Schaeffner acknowledged concerns raised by residents following Cataldo’s withdrawal and mentioned the possibility of restarting the search process.

The School Committee planned to visit Swansea schools on May 22 to learn more about Robidoux before inviting him to Marblehead for further discussions with teachers, students, and the community.

Updates on School Personnel and Student Survey Results

In addition to the changes in the superintendent search, Marblehead High School social worker Gina Hart presented the results of the 2023-2024 Survey of Substance Use and Related Risk Factors. The survey revealed a decrease in the percentage of students at risk for depression but an increase in reported suicide attempts compared to the previous year.

Notably, minority and marginalized students were more likely to report anxiety and depression, with specific percentages varying based on identity. The survey also highlighted concerns related to discrimination and early initiation of substance use among students.

Challenges in Communication and Labor Relations

During the meeting, the Marblehead Education Association raised issues related to a sick leave bank agreement that had not been signed by the School Committee. Additionally, the committee filed an unfair labor complaint against the MEA for bringing multiple silent representatives to bargaining sessions.

As discussions continue on these matters, the School Committee plans to address the results of a recent communications survey and explore ways to enhance support for students’ mental health and well-being.
