Clifford Jacoby Beck : “GBI Identifies Griffin Man Shot, Killed by Cobb County Police in Stolen Truck”

MABLETON, Ga. – A tragic incident unfolded in Mableton late Friday afternoon as Cobb County police were involved in a fatal shooting following a police chase. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 40-year-old Clifford Jacoby Beck, a Griffin man, was shot and killed by officers after attempting to flee a gas station at the intersection of Old Floyd Road and Fontaine Road.

The sequence of events began when police officers were alerted to a stolen box-style truck in the vicinity of Mableton Parkway and Veterans Memorial Highway. Upon locating the vehicle at a Chevron station, the officers called for backup and attempted to box in the truck in the station’s parking lot.

While the passenger of the truck exited the vehicle and complied with officers’ instructions, Beck, the driver, made a desperate attempt to escape the scene by driving into the police blockade. In response, officers fired into the truck, striking Beck. The intense situation resulted in both the truck and a patrol car catching fire.

Emergency medical services and firefighters swiftly intervened, extracting Beck from the burning vehicle and providing medical assistance. Despite their efforts, Beck succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office is set to perform an autopsy as the GBI continues its investigation into the incident. The involvement of the GBI in such cases is standard procedure whenever a shooting occurs involving a Georgia law enforcement officer.
