Lingadzi Police in Lilongwe has apprehended a 30-year-old suspect from Mzuzu, identified as Azimenye Michael Sikwese, for the creation of a fraudulent Facebook account using the name and image of Dr. Triephornia Thomson Mpinganjira.
Sergeant Cassim Manda, the publicist for Lingadzi Police, released a statement confirming the arrest of the self-proclaimed pastor in Mzuzu by detectives from the Cyber Crime Unit at the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe.
“The suspect allegedly used the fake account to publish malicious posts that tarnished the reputation and integrity of Dr. Triephornia. The motive behind the creation of the account was to deceive unsuspecting social media users and gain more followers,” said Manda.
Further investigations by the police revealed that the suspect operated multiple Facebook accounts, with one of them falsely claiming to be a pastor.
Lingadzi police are urging individuals who have been victims of similar fraudulent activities to report any suspicions to the nearest police station.
The public is also warned by the authorities that impersonating someone without consent is a violation of personal privacy and could result in legal consequences.
Sikwese, a resident of Chinunkha village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwaulambya in Chitipa district, is set to appear in court to face charges of cyber spamming, as outlined in Section 91 of the Electronic Transaction and Cyber Security Act of 2016.
