Accident – Death – Obituary News : SKOKIE, IL — In a recent court appearance, an 18-year-old man from Waukegan, Saul Esquivel, faced a judge for a string of serious charges, including armed robbery and car theft. The judge ruled that Esquivel must remain at the Cook County Jail until his trial.
Esquivel is accused of committing a series of crimes, including the armed robbery of a jogger in Wilmette on May 4 and the armed robbery of a 7-Eleven in Skokie on May 14. Additionally, he is facing charges related to possessing a stolen vehicle, burglarizing a vape store, fleeing from police multiple times, and a misdemeanor firearm offense.
During the court appearance, Esquivel’s court-appointed attorney, Vanessa Ficaro, mentioned that Esquivel had recently graduated from Waukegan High School and lived with his family. Assistant State’s Attorney Patrick Campbell detailed Esquivel’s involvement in various crimes, including breaking into a vape store and fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle.
One of the incidents involved Esquivel and an accomplice robbing a woman at gunpoint while she was on a morning run in Wilmette. The duo demanded the woman’s phone and attempted to unlock it using her Apple ID. When they couldn’t unlock it, they fled the scene.
Esquivel later confessed to stealing cars with his friend and expressed a liking for stealing cars. The investigation revealed that the stolen Hyundai used in the armed robbery had been carjacked earlier in Chicago.
In a separate incident in Skokie, Esquivel and another accomplice robbed a 7-Eleven at gunpoint, demanding cash from the store clerk. They fled the scene but were pursued by law enforcement. Esquivel abandoned the stolen vehicle and was found hiding under a bush in Skokie.
Prosecutor Campbell highlighted Esquivel’s violent behavior and his association with gang members, arguing against house arrest. The judge agreed that Esquivel posed a significant threat to the community and ordered him to remain in jail until trial.
Esquivel is scheduled to appear in court for indictment on June 13. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the charges and the danger Esquivel poses to the community due to his reckless and violent actions.
