Thane: Police in Maharashtra have apprehended a 26-year-old man for allegedly printing counterfeit currency notes in Panvel taluka of Raigad district. The suspect, identified as Prafulla Govind Patil, was found in possession of fake notes with a face value of over Rs 2 lakh during a raid conducted by the Central Crime Unit.

Technique Learned from YouTube Videos

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime), Navi Mumbai, Ajaykumar Landge, the accused had taught himself the art of printing fake currency by watching instructional videos on YouTube. The police received a tip-off leading them to raid a room in Palekhurd village, where the counterfeit notes were discovered.

Sophisticated Operation Uncovered

It was revealed that the accused had rented a room in a chawl at Taloja MIDC area and equipped it with two high-end scanners for the counterfeiting operation. Patil would scan genuine currency notes of Rs 50, Rs 100, and Rs 200 onto cotton paper, add radium strips, and press them with an iron before selling them on the market.

Large Quantity of Counterfeit Notes Seized

During the raid, law enforcement recovered a total of 1,440 fake notes, including 574 notes of Rs 50 denomination, 33 notes of Rs 100 denomination, and 856 notes of Rs 200 denomination. The face value of the seized counterfeit currency amounted to Rs 2,03,200.

Background of the Accused

The accused, who had previously failed his Class 9 exams, worked as a labourer in a company that dealt with refurbished computers and printers. It is believed that he acquired the knowledge of printing fake notes from his workplace, in addition to the online tutorials he studied.

Legal Action Taken

An official complaint has been lodged against Patil at the Taloja police station, and he is currently in police custody pending further investigation. The authorities are working to dismantle any criminal network associated with the production and distribution of fake currency in the region.
