Accident – Death – Obituary News : BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Over the past year and a half, Brevard County has made significant progress in clearing derelict boats from local waterways. The county has successfully removed 85 abandoned vessels, and now plans to tackle even more.

Recently, Brevard County Commissioners approved the allocation of $150,000 in tourist development funds to remove an additional 15-20 derelict boats from the water. This initiative targets more than 30 identified abandoned vessels that have been causing environmental and navigational hazards in the area.

Matt Culver, the coordinator for the county’s Boating and Waterways program, shared that the funding will be available starting in October. He emphasized the importance of addressing derelict vessels, which not only pose a threat to the environment but also create obstacles for boaters navigating the waterways.

Collaborating with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the county aims to recover costs associated with removing derelict boats from their owners. However, Culver acknowledged the ongoing challenge of securing funding for these cleanup efforts. He stated, “It’s a constant battle between trying to take the boats out and having the funding to actually take them out.”

In light of the county’s commitment to maintaining safe and clean waterways, the removal of derelict boats remains a top priority. By investing resources in this cleanup initiative, Brevard County demonstrates its dedication to preserving the natural beauty and navigational safety of its waters.
