Man accused of killing 20-year-old, dumping body in waterway.
Accident – Death – Obituary News :
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – After more than four years since a boater discovered the skeletal remains of 20-year-old Baba Said at the MLK Park Riverside Marina, a grand jury has indicted the man charged with his murder for a second time.
Jalen Braden, now 30, was initially charged with Said’s murder shortly after his disappearance. However, he was released on a $125,000 bond in February 2021 following his first indictment, as per court records.
Braden is now facing charges of first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, and abuse of a corpse.
Memphis police issued a City Watch alert for Said on July 5, 2019, after finding his car abandoned on the side of the interstate.
Investigators tracked Said’s phone to Braden’s residence on Amarillo Street in the Cherokee neighborhood. Subsequently, they discovered a sofa with a significant bloodstain on the curb outside the house.
During a search of the property, investigators found blood spots in the living room, along with a cleaning rag and bleach, suggesting Braden attempted to clean the crime scene. Braden later confessed to police that he had robbed Said at his residence, murdered him, and disposed of his body in a nearby waterway.
Months later, on October 6, 2019, a boater reported finding human bones near the boat ramp at West Mallory Avenue at MLK Park, which were later identified as Said’s.
According to prosecutors, Braden enticed Said to his home by having then-15-year-old Breanna Williams invite the 20-year-old over on July 3, 2019, just two days before his car was discovered abandoned.
Reports indicate that Braden confronted Said with a firearm, robbed him of $20, and then fatally shot him in the back of the head.
The two individuals then wrapped Said’s body in plastic bags, placed it in the trunk of his vehicle, and disposed of the corpse in a drainage ditch near Park and Getwell Road.
Braden was re-arrested on Thursday. Williams, now 20, was indicted just over two weeks ago and subsequently apprehended by U.S. Marshals. She is facing similar charges, including first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, especially aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.
