An Elizabeth City resident has been handed a lengthy prison sentence following his involvement in a shooting incident that took place in 2019. Thomas Stokley Jr., aged 31, has been sentenced to serve between six years, 11 months and nine years, four months for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Additionally, he will serve between five years, seven months and seven years, nine months for possession of a firearm by a felon and habitual felon. Stokley will be incarcerated under the custody of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.

The charges against Stokley stem from an incident in December 2019, when he allegedly shot another man in the vicinity of Corsair Circle and Liberator Street in Elizabeth City. Law enforcement officers were alerted to the scene following a report of a gunshot victim in the 700 block of Corsair Circle at approximately 10:21 a.m. on December 27, 2019.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Lazino Shelton, a 20-year-old resident of Elizabeth City, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Shelton was promptly transported to Sentara Albemarle Hospital before being airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for further treatment of his injuries.
