Terrell Byars, a 24-year-old man, has been apprehended by authorities for allegedly assaulting an elderly man outside a Sam’s Club in Monroeville. Byars had been evading law enforcement since August 2023, following his failure to comply with a sentence after pleading guilty to a gun charge.
The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Monroeville Police, had been on the lookout for Byars after he reportedly punched an 84-year-old man in the face in the parking lot of the Sam’s Club on William Penn Highway. The incident, which occurred on August 13, 2023, was captured on video, showing Byars attacking the elderly man.
As a result of the assault, the victim suffered a swollen eye and head injury from hitting his head on the ground. Byars managed to evade capture until recently when he was found hiding under a bed in the West End section of Pittsburgh.
Authorities arrested Byars without incident and subsequently transferred him to the Allegheny County Jail to face charges related to the assault. The swift action by law enforcement has brought a sense of relief to the community, especially to the victim and his family.
