In a landmark ruling, the Anambra State High Court in Onitsha has handed down a life imprisonment sentence to three former police officers for the murder of 42-year-old Chukwunonso Uchenwoke from Mbosi in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state. The tragic incident occurred during the arrest of Uchenwoke for alleged assault and malicious damage on May 14, 2016, at No 13 Ibe Street, East Niger Layout, Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area.

The convicted ex-police officers, identified as Juliet Ekwueme, Ugochukwu Obiakor, and Raphael Chike, were subsequently dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force following the incident. The court, presided over by Justice A.O. Okuma, found the accused guilty of conspiracy and murder charges, in violation of Sections 495(a) and 274(I) of the Criminal Code Cap 36 Volume II, Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 1991 as amended.

Justice Okuma sentenced the three former officers to seven years imprisonment for conspiracy and life imprisonment for manslaughter, marking a significant victory for the prosecution team led by Trulaw Chambers’ Principal Counsel, C.J. Okeke Esq., with the Fiat of the Anambra State Attorney General.

Following the sentencing, Prosecutor Okeke hailed the judgement as a triumph of justice and highlighted the importance of effective legal representation in upholding the rule of law. Defence counsels for the convicted officers, including G.A Oluwatuase, C.E Ezenwa Esq., and C.J Agbata, expressed intentions to appeal the ruling or awaited a copy of the judgement to determine their next steps.
