More information continues to surface regarding the attempted assassination of the Slovak Prime Minister. The head of the government in Bratislava was shot on Wednesday and rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Reports have identified the alleged attacker of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico as a 71-year-old man, according to local media.

71-Year-Old Writer Identified as Suspect

The individual detained and suspected of shooting Prime Minister Robert Fico is a 71-year-old man from central Slovakia, identified by Slovak media as a local writer, as reported by AFP via Agerpres.

“I think I can confirm, yes,” Slovak Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok responded to journalists when asked about the attacker’s identity.

Local reports indicate that the suspect is one of the founders of the literary club Duha (Rainbow) in the town of Levice.

The man is the author of several poetry collections and is a member of the official association of Slovak writers.

Moreover, the association confirmed on Facebook that the man has been a member since 2015, stating that if the allegations are proven true, “the membership of this despicable person will be immediately revoked.”

Son of Suspect Speaks Out

On the other hand, the son of the suspect told aktuality.sk news site that his father legally owns a firearm.

“I’ll tell you one thing: he did not vote for him. That’s all I can say,” he replied when asked about his father’s attitude towards Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Several statements from the suspect have been circulating on social media. According to the source, in a video posted online eight years ago, he stated, “The world is full of violence and weapons. People seem to be going crazy.”

The suspect also claimed to have founded a “Movement against Violence” in Levice, which is described on his Facebook page as “a political party in the making whose goal is to prevent the spread of violence in society,” the same source notes.

It is worth noting that Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot on Wednesday in broad daylight after a government meeting in the town of Handlova. He was greeting a group of people when one of them fired at him. Multiple gunshots were heard. The government official was injured and rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.
