Accident – Death – Obituary News :
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A resident of Highland Heights bravely assisted law enforcement in apprehending a carjacker who attempted to harm him in the driveway of his North Highland home on Tuesday night.
The victim recounted how his three dogs alerted him to the presence of an intruder just before 10 p.m. He went outside to investigate and found that his truck had been broken into.
Upon inspection, he discovered that the driver’s side door and rear windows of the camper of his 2002 Dodge Ram were open, and the assailant attempted to stab him multiple times with a pocket knife.
“Before I could even inquire about what was happening, he brandished a knife,” said the victim, who preferred to remain anonymous. “I stepped back and then drew out my baton.”
The victim stated that he struck the suspect in the leg with the baton, causing him to flee. He then pursued the suspect in his truck.
“I was focused on avoiding being stabbed,” he recalled. “I trailed him until he reached Give Avenue, where I was able to pull over and alert the authorities, who promptly arrived on the scene.”
Law enforcement officers located the suspect, identified as 58-year-old James Young, in the backyard of a residence on Give Avenue, with a pocket knife found nearby.
“They discovered it concealed in a flower bed. He attempted to conceal it,” the victim revealed.
During the pursuit of Young, the victim noticed a vehicle code reader valued at £400 falling from Young’s pocket.
Young also smashed a window to gain entry into the victim’s truck. The victim expressed relief at being able to thwart his actions.
“My primary concern was removing the individual responsible from the streets,” he emphasised.
Young has been charged with aggravated assault and burglary of a vehicle. He is currently being held on bail set at £15,000.
Young is scheduled to appear before a judge on Thursday.
