– Debt trap suspected in Puthuppally family case.
Accident – Death – Obituary News :
A tragic incident unfolded in Cumbum, Tamil Nadu, as a three-member family from Puthuppally, near Kottayam, was found dead in a car on Thursday morning. The deceased individuals were identified as George P Scaria, aged 60, his wife Mercy, aged 58, and their son Akhil S George, aged 29, residents of Kanjirathummoodu.
Sad Case of Suicide
According to Theni SP R Shiva Prasad, the authorities believe it was a case of suicide, with a poisonous substance discovered inside the car. The Tamil Nadu police are coordinating with their counterparts in Kerala to determine the exact cause of this tragic incident. Initial reports suggest that the family was grappling with financial difficulties.
Discovery of the Bodies
The car was located on the Kumily-Cumbum stretch, situated in a farmland. The bodies of George and Akhil were found in the front seats, while Mercy’s body was discovered in the rear, her face resting against the window.
Financial Woes and Debt Traps
The news of the family’s demise has sent shockwaves through their relatives and the residents of Kanjirathumoodu. It has been revealed that the family was burdened with a debt of approximately Rs 2 crore after using their property as collateral for a business venture that ultimately failed. The pressure of this financial strain led them to sign a sale agreement for 4.5 acres of land and their house, forcing them to relocate to a housing colony near a church in Paarapaya, Thottakadu.
Relatives shared that the family kept to themselves and maintained minimal interaction with neighbours. Even when they shifted to Thottakadu, their nearby relatives were unaware of their relocation. The family was instructed not to engage with the neighbours, possibly due to their distress over the mounting financial troubles.
Unfolding Tragedy
Three months ago, the family moved to a house in Thottakadu, reportedly owned by the individual who facilitated the sale agreement for their property in Kanjirathumoodu. The sudden and tragic deaths of George, Mercy, and Akhil have left the community reeling from the loss.
Community Response
Puthuppally ward member Nibu John received a distressing call from the police, prompting him to inform the relatives of the deceased family. The family had previously experienced the loss of their younger son Nikhil in a drowning incident three years ago. Despite George’s successful business ventures and seemingly stable life, the family’s financial woes took a devastating turn, resulting in this heartbreaking outcome.
