A man named Garba Aliyu has been given a unique punishment by the Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty of stealing a woman’s purse. The 30-year-old was ordered to sweep the court premises for three weeks as part of his sentence.
The court heard from Prosecutor Insp. Chidi Leo that Aliyu entered the shop of Adanna Ebuka under false pretenses, pretending to purchase a loaf of bread. However, he took advantage of the situation to steal the woman’s purse. Fortunately, the purse was later recovered by the police during their investigation.
Aliyu pleaded guilty to the charge of theft, which led to his conviction and sentencing. Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel commended the convict for his plea, stating that it saved the court time. However, he also warned that the punishment could have been more severe if Aliyu had not admitted to the crime.
Despite the guilty plea, Emmanuel acknowledged that Aliyu was a first-time offender. He advised the convict to refrain from such criminal activities in the future, emphasizing the court’s disapproval of violence.
It is hoped that this unique punishment will serve as a deterrent to others considering similar crimes in the future.
