In a devastating turn of events, 24-year-old Cameron Newby lost his life in a senseless drive-by shooting on Heard Avenue in North Memphis. The incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday while Newby was simply taking out the trash, according to police reports.
Newby’s father, Terry Golden, revealed that the tragic shooting was allegedly sparked by a dispute over an ex-girlfriend. Jayln Lewis, 22, and Keith Coffer, 25, have since been charged with First-Degree Murder in connection with Newby’s death.
Describing his son as a loving father, Golden shared that Newby leaves behind four children, three boys, and one girl. “He loved his kids and being a dad,” Golden stated. “I always told him to take care of his kids, no matter what.”
Golden expressed his disbelief at the possible motive behind his son’s killing, highlighting the need for peaceful resolution in such situations. “If things aren’t working out with your child’s mother, you can still fulfill your responsibilities as a parent without being together,” he emphasized.
Reports suggest that Lewis had confronted his ex-girlfriend and Newby at their home hours before the fatal shooting. An argument ensued, leading to Lewis being asked to leave. Subsequently, Lewis retrieved a gun from a vehicle, fired shots at Newby, and fled the scene.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the initial confrontation. Golden recalled warning his son about the potential danger, advising him to be cautious in such volatile situations.
