LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A cutting-edge mental health facility is currently being built in Lubbock, Texas, to address the growing need for mental health services in the community.

The Hope Center, a state-of-the-art mental health diversion center, is being constructed adjacent to StarCare Specialty HealthCare’s Sunrise Canyon Hospital in East Lubbock.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Hope Center has brought a sense of optimism to the local community, with one mother expressing gratitude for the much-needed facility.

The mother, who chose to remain anonymous to protect her son’s privacy, shared her personal story of loss and the impact it has had on her family.

Following the tragic death of her youngest son in a car accident over a decade ago, the mother has been navigating the challenges of supporting her surviving son, whose mental health has deteriorated over the years.

Struggling with grief and guilt, her son has experienced paranoia and other mental health issues, making it difficult for him to maintain employment and leading him to live with his mother.

Despite her efforts to seek help for her son, including involuntary commitments to mental health facilities and treatment in jail, the lack of adequate resources and support has made the journey even more challenging for the family.

The mother’s story reflects a broader issue in the community, with law enforcement officials highlighting the prevalence of mental health-related incidents among individuals entering the criminal justice system.

Sheriff Kelly Rowe of Lubbock County emphasized the need for specialized mental health services to address the complex needs of individuals with mental health conditions, rather than relying on jails as de facto mental health institutions.

Recognizing the importance of early intervention and diversion programs, StarCare, the local mental health authority, has been at the forefront of providing crisis intervention and support services to individuals in need.

Bobby Carter, Director of Diversion Programs at StarCare, highlighted the role of the Hope Center in offering a safe and supportive environment for individuals in mental health crisis, diverting them from the criminal justice system.

The Hope Center is set to expand the capacity of StarCare’s existing services, providing additional consult rooms and extended observation units to accommodate the growing demand for mental health support in the community.

As part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Health and Human Services Commission has allocated funding to increase the capacity of mental health facilities, aiming to reduce wait times and improve access to care for individuals in need.

While progress has been made in reducing waitlists for mental health services, there is still a significant number of underserved adults awaiting treatment, underscoring the ongoing need for comprehensive mental health support in the community.

Community leaders and policymakers have recognised the importance of investing in mental health services, with the city and county allocating funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to support the construction of the Hope Center.

The Hope Center is scheduled to open in June 2025, providing a vital resource for individuals and families grappling with mental health challenges in the Lubbock area.

As the community continues to focus on addressing the mental health crisis, resources and support services are available for those in need, including crisis helplines and mental health facilities.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, do not hesitate to seek help by contacting the available support services in the area.

Together, we can work towards building a more resilient and supportive community for individuals struggling with mental health issues.
