Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Middlesex District Attorney’s office has recently announced significant breakthroughs in two long-standing cold cases, thanks to a combination of traditional detective work and cutting-edge investigatory tools.

The first case involves the conviction of Arthur L. Massie for the brutal 1971 slaying of a Bedford homemaker, Natalie Scheublin. After evading authorities for over 50 years, Massie was finally brought to justice, thanks to a meticulous investigation that spanned decades. Middlesex DA Marian Ryan revealed that the breakthrough came in 2019, with the help of the newly established Cold Case Unit. Investigators were able to connect Massie to the crime through a thumbprint found on the victim’s stolen car. Further digging into Massie’s past uncovered his involvement in fraudulent activities in the 1990s, leading to additional charges of solicitation to suborn perjury.

The second case involves the identification of Stephen Paul Gale as the suspect in a series of sexual assaults at a Framingham department store in the 1980s. Gale, now 71, allegedly held two female employees at gunpoint and sexually assaulted them during a robbery. Despite DNA evidence collected at the crime scene in 1989, the suspect remained unidentified until recently. Through the use of investigative genetic genealogy, prosecutors were able to develop new leads and obtain DNA samples from Gale’s family members, leading to his identification and the issuance of an arrest warrant.

Both cases demonstrate the power of persistence and innovation in solving cold cases that have long haunted families and communities. Whether through old-fashioned detective work or cutting-edge technology, justice can be served, even decades after the crimes were committed.

The Middlesex DA’s office is urging anyone with information on Stephen Paul Gale’s whereabouts to contact the Framingham Police Department at 508-532-5923. These developments should provide hope to other families still waiting for closure in cold cases, knowing that with determination and the right tools, justice can prevail..
