Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a recent statement, Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed to have targeted a U.S. Navy destroyer and a commercial ship in the Red Sea. The attack on the warship reportedly took place nearly two days earlier, with the vessel successfully intercepting the missile aimed at it.

Decrease in Attacks on Shipping

The latest announcement from the Houthis comes amidst a slowdown in their attacks on shipping, which have been disrupting trade through a crucial corridor leading to the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea. While the rebels have not openly acknowledged the decrease in attacks, the U.S. military has suggested that their airstrikes and interceptions have disrupted Houthi assaults and depleted their weapon stockpiles.

It is worth noting that the Houthis have been claiming responsibility for attacks that occurred several days ago, indicating a shift in their tactics.

Claims by Houthi Military Spokesperson

Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree stated that the rebels targeted the USS Mason with missiles and carried out an attack on a ship identified as the Destiny. Several vessels share the name Destiny in shipping registries.

The USS Mason, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, has been deployed in the Red Sea and the wider region as part of a U.S.-led coalition aimed at preventing Houthi attacks on shipping. The U.S. military’s Central Command reported that on Monday night, the Mason successfully intercepted and destroyed an inbound anti-ship ballistic missile launched by the Iranian-backed Houthis from Yemen over the Red Sea.

Response from the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet

The U.S. Navy’s Mideast-based 5th Fleet has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the alleged attack on the Destiny.

Houthi Attacks on Shipping

The Houthis claim that their attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden are intended to pressure Israel to end its conflict with Hamas in Gaza, where the ongoing war has resulted in the deaths of over 35,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials. The conflict escalated after Hamas-led militants initiated an attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in 1,200 casualties and the abduction of around 250 individuals.

Since November, the Houthis have carried out more than 50 attacks on shipping, seized one vessel, and sunk another, as reported by the U.S. Maritime Administration. The threat posed by these attacks has led to a decrease in shipping activity through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
