Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recently announced that the remains of a 17-year-old soldier from Michigan who went missing during the Korean War have been identified. Thomas A. Smith, a member of the 2nd Squad, 3rd Platoon, Company A, 3rd Engineer Combat Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, disappeared during a defense action near Chinju in the summer of 1950. Despite extensive efforts, Smith could not be located after the battle, and no remains were recovered.

Similarly, the DPAA also confirmed the identification of U.S. Army Corporal Richard Seloover, a 17-year-old soldier from Illinois who was declared missing in action during combat along South Korea’s Naktong River in September 1950. The circumstances surrounding Seloover’s death remain unknown, and his body was unable to be recovered due to the intense fighting in the area.

Both Smith and Seloover were officially declared deceased by the Army on December 31, 1953, and their names were memorialized on the Courts of the Missing. After years of search and recovery efforts, two sets of remains labeled as “Unknown X-5077 Tanggok” and “Unknown X-348” were found near villages in South Korea in late 1950. Despite their burial as unknowns in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, these remains were recently disinterred for further analysis.

Through extensive dental, anthropological, and mitochondrial DNA testing, the DPAA successfully identified the remains of “Unknown X-5077 Tanggok” as belonging to Smith in September 2023. Subsequently, in January 2024, the remains of “Unknown X-348” were confirmed to be those of Seloover. With the identification of these soldiers, rosettes will be placed next to their names on the Courts of the Missing.

Smith will be laid to rest in his hometown of Grant, Michigan, while Seloover will be buried in Rock Falls, Illinois. The DPAA has not disclosed information regarding any surviving family members of the two soldiers. It is worth noting that over 450 Americans who perished in the Korean War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. Despite the challenges, the DPAA continues its mission to bring closure to families of the over 7,000 American soldiers still unaccounted for from the conflict..
