Michael Skinner : Sarasota Officer Saves Owner from Runaway Boat

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – A Sarasota Police officer, Officer Michael Skinner of the Sarasota Police Marine Unit, recently showcased his heroism during an intense water rescue that was captured on body camera.

The incident took place on Friday, May 3, when Officer Skinner responded to a distress call about an unmanned vessel circling in the inner coastal water near channel marker 72, close to Phillippi Creek. Upon arrival, Officer Skinner noticed a man unconscious on the deck of the boat, which was spinning uncontrollably.

Acting swiftly, Officer Skinner manoeuvred his own vessel to intercept the unmanned boat, successfully wedging it against a nearby seawall to prevent any further danger. He then boarded the boat and promptly shut down the engine.

With Sarasota County Fire Rescue on standby along the seawall, medical aid was swiftly provided to the individual on board, later identified as Paul Hudson, the owner of the boat. Thanks to Officer Skinner’s quick and decisive actions, Hudson, who was semi-conscious, received crucial medical attention and was promptly transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Fortunately, he is expected to make a full recovery.

Officer Skinner, along with Officer Dixon, are dedicated advocates for boater safety in the Sarasota area. They regularly educate boaters on the importance of wearing an emergency cutoff switch, especially during National Safe Boating Week, which takes place from May 18-24, 2024. Additionally, their efforts played a significant role in the passing of Ethan’s Law through the state legislature.

Officer Skinner’s expert navigation skills and adherence to safety protocols, such as the emergency cutoff switch, not only reflect his professionalism but also highlight his extensive training as a law enforcement officer.

The incident is currently under investigation by Florida Fish and Wildlife authorities.
